Elliot finally showed up to his apartment with the requested movies, dropping them on the coffee table and reaching down to bet Flipper when she came up to greet him.
His eyes moved to search out Darlene. "Did you really order pizza?"
Darlene had been sitting on the couch when Elliot came in, thumbing through the pages of a magazine that she'd nicked from some sidewalk stand while the person who was supposed to be watching it had been conveniently distracted -- New York was full of distractions, and Darlene knew how to make them work in her favor for the most part. All of it was a matter of misdirection.
"Yeah." She replied boredly, not bothering to look up from the magazine that she was honestly only half interested in. It was something centered around celebrity gossip; who was dating who, who had broken up with who and who had been seen out and about in New York, Los Angeles, or some other ritzy foreign location. They weren't the things that Darlene cared about, but the brainwashed masses seemed to eat that shit up and that was really what Darlene found to be entertaining.
People loved living vicariously, rather than going out and actually doing things themselves. That's where she and Elliot differed, though. They were really making a change.
"Like twenty minutes ago. Should be here any minute now. Did you find them?" Darlene glanced up at Elliot from over the top of the glossy pages. "I mean, it only took you half the fucking night, you better at least have something."
"I told you I did..." Elliot muttered. "They're right in front of you," he added, though she hadn't seemed to be paying the least bit of attention when he set them down on the coffee table. Why was she reading that stupid magazine anyway? She definitely didn't get it from his apartment.
He walked further into the apartment and set his bag on his bed before going to his computer, booting it up. He rubbed the back of his neck as he glanced back at her.
